Crisco is a US brand of vegetable fat used in cooking. The famous product is a white fat that stays solid at room temperature — cooks call this — and goes into pie crusts, , and frying pans. It is made from plant oil, not from animal fat like lard, though actually many older recipes that said “lard” can use Crisco instead, and the feel in dough is similar. Because the brand became so common, some Americans say Crisco for this kind of fat even when the tub is another brand. There is also a liquid Crisco oil, but people usually mean the solid white fat. In Taiwan you are much more likely to buy 起酥油 than this American name.
起酥油(美國牌子;指固態植物性油脂,不是一般的植物油,也不是豬油)
組成A brand name made by clipping crystallized cottonseed oil — squeezing those words down into Crisco. It is now often used as if it were the common word for the fat, not only the one company.
