A describing word for something so bad or damaging that it stops a person or thing from working or moving forward normally. "Crippling pain" is pain so bad you can barely move. "Crippling debt" is debt so big it ruins your life. The word comes from "cripple," an older word for a disabled person that many people now avoid because it can sound — "crippling" to describe damage is still common, but it's good to know where it comes from.
