Crimplene is a kind of artificial cloth, a polyester, that became famous in Britain in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. People liked it because it did not easily get lines when you folded or crushed it, it held its shape, and it was easy to wash. Dresses, suits and neat everyday clothes were often made from it. It can feel a bit stiff and shiny next to cotton or wool, and in hot weather many people found it less comfortable — so it later went out of fashion. Though actually you still meet the word when someone is talking about clothes from that time, often with a smile or a slight groan. It began as a brand name, not as an old folk word for cloth.
