Criminology is the scientific study of crime and of people who break the law. It asks why crime happens, who is drawn into it, how a society answers it, and whether prisons and police really help. It sits close to sociology, psychology, and law, but it is its own university subject. It is a formal, academic word — you study it; you do not use it much in everyday chat. A person who works in this field is a . Though actually, criminology is wider than “how to catch a criminal.” Police training can be part of the picture, but a lot of the subject is about society, power, and patterns, not about one case.
