Crimea is a peninsula — a piece of land almost surrounded by the Black Sea, joined to the rest of Ukraine by a thin strip. That geography is the first thing the word names: nearly an island, on the Black Sea. The Crimean War was fought there in the 1850s, with Britain, France, and the Ottoman Empire against Russia; that is why older English books mention Crimea so often (nurses, charges, a far-away war). Though actually, the around the name are messy and still live. Russia took control in 2014, and many countries still treat Crimea as part of Ukraine. People argue about how to say “whose it is”; the place itself does not move. For a , start with the map: a nearly-surrounded land in the Black Sea, and the 19th-century war named after it. The adjective is Crimean (the Crimean War, Crimean Tatar). It has nothing to do with the English word crime, even though it looks a little like it.
