A cricketer is someone who plays cricket — the bat-and-ball sport, with wickets, overs, and a long game on grass. In countries where cricket is big (England, Australia, India, Pakistan, the West Indies, and others), this is the ordinary word, the same pattern as footballer. It can mean a professional who plays for a country, or someone who plays at the weekend for a village club. In Taiwan, cricket is not a school sport, so you will mostly meet the word in English news and sports pages, not in daily talk. Though actually, American English often says cricket player instead; cricketer sounds more British. Either is understood. The person plays the sport cricket, which is not the little insect that makes a noise at night — that is a different word that only looks the same.
