Cribbage is a card game. Players make combinations that score points — pairs, runs, cards that add up to fifteen — and they keep score by putting little wooden into holes on a small board. That peg-board is the picture people have of the game. Each player also lays some cards aside into a “crib”: extra cards that one player later scores from. The game is named after that crib. It is a sitting-down game for two, or sometimes more: pubs, kitchens, older players, especially in Britain and parts of North America. It is not a casino game and not a children’s party game. Though actually, fewer young people learn it now, so it can sound a bit old-fashioned — but people who play it still play it with real care. You do not need the full rules to use the word: it simply names that peg-board card game.
