A Cretan is a person from , and Cretan also means “of ” — Cretan food, Cretan mountains, a Cretan town. The place itself is : the largest island that belongs to Greece, in the southeast of the Mediterranean Sea. A very old civilisation called the civilisation had its heart there from about 3000 BC to about 1100 BC; the palaces and the old stories of the island grow out of that world. So Cretan always points at that island, and at the people and things that come from it — it is not another name for the island. The word is simply plus -an, the same kind of ending as in American or Korean. It is a normal, neutral word. Be careful on the page: looks similar but is a completely different, offensive word.
