A creel is a basket a fisher uses to carry fish after catching them. It often hangs on the back or sits against the hip, and it may have a lid and small holes so the fish stay cool and damp. You meet the word in talk and stories about rivers, trout, and country fishing, not in city shops. It feels old and specialised: a tool-name that fishers share. Though actually, in some coastal places a creel is also a cage you sink into the sea to trap lobsters — still a fisher’s thing, but it stays in the water instead of coming home on your back. If “creel” draws a blank look, people just say fish basket.
組成From Northern Middle English crele, possibly from an Old French root *creille, a variant of greille (compare French grille), from Latin crāticula, a small grid or grate. The “possibly” matters: that French path is not certain.
