A creditor is the person, bank, shop, or company that you owe money to. If a bank lends you money, the bank is your creditor. If you take a sofa home and promise to pay next year, the shop is a creditor. The other side of the pair is the — the one who owes. In news about money trouble, creditors wait to be paid, or they go to court. It is a business and law word, not a kitchen-table word, though the idea is simple: they gave you money or goods, and you still have to give something back. Though actually, a creditor is not only a big bank; a friend who lent you cash is a creditor too, even if nobody uses the word at the dinner table.
組成From Middle English creditour, from Anglo-Norman creditour, from Latin crēditor, from crēditum (a loan), from crēditus, the past form of crēdō (to lend / to trust). The -or ending marks the person on that side of the loan.
