Crayola is a brand of coloured crayons, and also markers, paints, and other art things for children. The company is American, and the yellow-and-green box is the picture in many people’s heads. Some speakers use Crayola loosely for a child’s crayon, the way some say for a tissue — though actually it is still a proper name, not a general English word for every crayon, and other brands exist. It keeps a capital C. You meet it in schools, toy shops, and childhood stories; it is not formal and not slang, just a famous make. Alice Binney, the founder’s wife, coined the name from French craie, “chalk,” plus , “,” because a crayon is colour in an stick. In Taiwan the brand is the one children recognise as 繪兒樂.
組成A made-up brand name, coined by Alice (Stead) Binney. From French craie (“chalk”) + oleaginous (“oily”); the -ola piece is that oily ending, used like a product suffix.
