To crave something is to want it with a very strong, almost bodily pull — stronger than like, stronger than want. People crave food (chocolate, spicy soup, a cigarette), and they also crave things you cannot eat: attention, sleep, adventure, a kind of life they do not have. When the object is food or drink, the feeling often sits in the body; you can almost taste it. When the object is abstract, the word still says the desire is not mild or polite — it occupies you. It is ordinary English, not slang and not especially formal. Parents, doctors, and friends all use it. The noun that rides with it is a craving (“I had a craving for dumplings”). Crave is usually a verb. You crave something, or you crave to do something; you do not usually “have a crave.” And it is not the same as , which looks similar and means — that is a different word with a different story.
