To crash-land is what a pilot does when the plane is in trouble and they have to bring it down right now, in a sudden and dangerous way — onto a field, a road, water, or some other place that is not a proper runway. The plane may break. People may get hurt. But the pilot is still trying to land it, not just falling out of the sky. That is the important line. A crash is the plane hitting and coming apart. A crash-landing is an emergency landing that may look like a crash, and may wreck the plane, but someone is still flying it down on purpose. You crash-land a plane; the occasion itself is often called a crash-landing. News reports use both. It is a serious word, not a joke word, though people sometimes stretch it in talk (“my first day crash-landed”) to mean something ended in a mess. The home meaning is always the plane.
