The cranium is the hard bone that wraps around your brain — the brain-box of the head. In everyday talk most people just say skull. Doctors and biology teachers prefer cranium when they mean that round upper part. Though actually, textbooks sometimes keep the jaw separate: skull can mean the whole set of head bones, and cranium the part that covers the brain, not the mandible. It is a formal, textbook word, not a word for the dinner table.
