A crampon is a metal frame with sharp points that a straps under a boot. The points bite into ice or hard snow so the foot does not slide. They come in pairs, one for each boot, and you put them on only when the ground is icy — walking on rock with them is and can break the points. Mountaineers, ice , and people crossing glaciers use them. It is a ' word, not everyday English. You may also hear it as a verb, meaning to climb while wearing them, but the thing itself is this piece of metal.
