Craic is enjoyable talk and fun with other people — the jokes, the warmth, the feeling that the room is alive. You hear it especially in Ireland. What’s the craic? is a friendly “What’s going on? Any news? Are we having a good time?” The craic was mighty means the night was really good company, not that something broke. You say it exactly like crack. It is informal, social, and very much a spoken word; writing the Irish-looking spelling often waves a little flag: this is Irish fun, a pub, a kitchen table, not a business meeting. Though actually, this is a spelling round-trip, not an ancient Irish treasure English later borrowed. English speakers in Ireland already used crack for fun and chat. Irish borrowed that English word and spelled it craic. Then English started using the Irish spelling when it wanted that Irish flavour. Same sound as crack; do not hear the drug sense, and do not hear “a broken place.” If there is no Irish colour in the scene, many speakers would just say fun, a good time, or a good laugh.
