    A coyote is a wild animal in the dog family, smaller than a wolf, native to western North America and Mexico — though actually they now live in many more places, even at the edge of cities, because they are clever about people and leftover food. They hunt small animals, sometimes in pairs or loose groups, and they are famous for night calls that sound like a mix of a howl and a yip. People stretch the name: along the US–Mexico border, a coyote can also mean a person who is paid to guide others across, a harsh, informal use taken from the animal. The everyday word is just the animal. In American English most people say it in three parts, kai-OH-tee; some older western voices say two parts, kai-ote. It is an ordinary nature word, not slang, unless you mean that border sense.

組成English borrowed this from Spanish coyote. Spanish took it from a Nahuan language of Mexico, from an old form *koyoo-tl. A similar word, ki-o-tī, is recorded in Chinook. The English word does not split into English pieces.
