In a racing boat, most people pull oars. One person does not. That person is the cox. The cox sits (often at the back), steers the boat, calls the timing, and tells the when to go hard. A small cox is useful, because extra weight slows the boat. The word is a short, informal form of , and you hear it a lot in British and university . It is also a verb: you can cox a crew, meaning you do that job in the boat. Though actually, the cox is in charge in the race, even if their arms look idle. This is not the family name Cox, which is just a name and has nothing to do with boats.
