    A cowlick is a bit of hair that will not lie down. It sticks up, or twists against the rest of the hair, often at the front or at the crown. The name is a joke people kept: it looks as if a cow licked that patch and left it standing. No cow is required. Parents notice cowlicks on children; barbers work around them; grown people still have them. It is a friendly, slightly comic word, not a medical one. It is close to a hair whorl (the spiral at the crown), but a cowlick can be any stubborn , including a bit of fringe that springs up no matter how you wet it. You cannot really “fix” one for long; you can only comb with it or hide it.
