Couture is the design and making of expensive, fashionable clothes, or those clothes themselves. In careful use it points to very high fashion, often sewn by hand for one person; the full French phrase is haute couture, and English often it to couture. Magazines say a couture dress or the world of couture. Though actually, shops and ads also stretch the word: they may call something couture just to make it sound special, even when it is not truly made for one body. It sounds French and a little for the rich. Say it roughly koo-TOOR.
