Counterclockwise means turning the opposite way from the hands of a clock. If a clock’s hands go from 12 down toward 1, counterclockwise goes from 12 toward 11. It can describe how something moves (turn it counterclockwise) or the direction itself (a counterclockwise spin). This is the usual word in American English. In British English people say , and they mean the same thing. Though actually, in science and maths you will see both, so the important thing is the direction, not which word the book chose. It is a normal, everyday word for instructions: lids, screws, taps, maps.
