Counter-espionage is the work of trying to stop someone spying on your country. Espionage is the secret watching and the stealing of secrets; counter-espionage is the other side of that game — catching the spies, blocking them, or feeding them false stories so they go home with the wrong picture. It is a formal noun for the process, used by governments, secret services, and news about them, not in the market or the playground. People also put it in front of another noun: counter-espionage work, a counter-espionage team. You will also see it written counterespionage, with no ; it is the same word. Though actually, American offices often prefer , a wider word that covers protecting secrets in general, not only hunting foreign spies. Counter-espionage points more sharply at “stop their spies.” Films make it look fast and clever; a lot of the real work is slow checking.
