A cottager, in older English, was a person who lived in a cottage — a small, simple country house. In past centuries in Britain this often meant a working person with a little house and maybe a scrap of land, not the owner of a big farm. We do not really use it for today’s holiday guests in a rented cottage. That later picture is a tourist; this word, in the old sense, is about how people lived.
組成From cottage (a small hut / small country house) + -er (a person who lives there). Compare older cotter.
