The Cotswolds are a stretch of gentle hills in western England, famous for pretty villages, river valleys, and houses built of a local yellow-grey stone people call Cotswold stone. Tourists love it. We say the Cotswolds for the whole area. Though actually, Cotswold without -s is the adjective: Cotswold stone, a Cotswold village. It is a place name, not a family name and not an animal, even though it looks a bit like one.
