A coterie is a small group of people who enjoy the same things and spend time together — and they are not eager to let new people in. It is a slightly word: a teacher or a newspaper might say it; teenagers more often say or their little group. The feeling can be warm (a tight circle who share a hobby) or a little cold (the door is closed). It is not a secret society; it is more like a private club without the building.
