A corrie is a deep, rounded hollow high on a mountain, like a giant bowl cut into the slope, often with steep walls and a lake at the bottom. Ice carved many of them long ago. The word is mainly British, and especially Scottish; American English usually says cirque for the same land shape, and Welsh English may say cwm. You will see it on maps and in geography more than in everyday talk. Though actually, Corrie is also a surname and a short form of a given name, so if you only hear it, it may be a person, not a mountain. The land sense comes from a Gaelic word for a cauldron — people looked at the hollow and thought of a cooking pot in the hillside.
