A corporal is a low rank in the army, and in some air forces and other services too. It sits above an ordinary soldier (a private) and below a sergeant. A corporal is often the first person who is really in charge of a small group — maybe eight to twelve people. They still do the same hard work as everyone else, but they also give small orders and keep the group in line. You hear it a lot among soldiers and in war films; people sometimes it to “Corp.” It is not a high rank. Though actually, the name is shared across countries, but the exact job and pay-step are not identical everywhere. Do not mix this with the other corporal, an older word about the body (as in corporal punishment, hitting the body as punishment). They look the same on the page. This army word came from an Italian word for a small leader, “the head of a group,” and later got mixed in people’s mouths with the “body” word, which is why the spelling looks like “body” even though the rank is about being a small boss.
