A coroner is an official whose job is to find out why someone died, especially when the death was sudden, unexpected, or looks unusual. In England a coroner is a legal officer: they may hold a public inquiry into the death. They are not always a doctor. In some parts of the United States the job is mixed up with “medical examiner”, who is a doctor — the tidy dictionary picture is tidier than the real jobs. You meet the word in news stories about deaths. It is a formal job title. Though actually, the word does not mean “the person who puts on the crown”. It comes from an old job, guardian of the crown's pleas: an officer looking after the king's interests. Compare the old form crowner. It is a of crown.
