    Cornell is a well-known American university in the small city of , in New York State — not in New York City. It is one of the Ivy League colleges, a small group of old, famous universities in the north-east of the United States. People say Cornell the way they say Oxford: they mean the university. It is a proper name, so it takes a capital letter. Though actually there are other Cornells (a family name, a few other schools), but in news and school talk Cornell almost always means this one.
