The cornea is the clear covering on the very front of your eye. It sits over the coloured part and the black centre, and it lets light in. You cannot see it as a separate piece when you look in a mirror, because it is see-through — though actually it is quite tough, which is why the old Latin name compares it to horn. If it is scratched, it hurts a lot, because it has many nerves. Doctors use this word, and so do glasses shops; it is a normal body word, a little medical.
