    When wine is corked, it smells and tastes wrong because of a problem with the cork. Usually a chemical in the cork has got into the wine, and the wine then smells like wet cardboard, a damp cellar, or a cloth. It will not make you ill; it is just spoiled, and you cannot fix it by letting the bottle “breathe”. Waiters expect you to smell the wine and send a corked bottle back — that is normal, not rude. Though actually, people sometimes say corked as if air leaked in through a bad cork. That is a different fault: the wine has had too much air, and it tastes flat or tired. Corked, in careful talk, is this cork-smell problem, not just “the bottle has a cork” and not just “air got in”.
