In this use, Corinthian means amateur in a proud, old-fashioned way: you do the sport because you love it, not because you are paid. A Corinthian player is meant to play fair and not make a fuss about money. You can use it as an adjective (a Corinthian spirit) or as a noun (a Corinthian — such a player). It is rather British, and you meet it more in older writing, club names, and speeches than in everyday talk. Today the plain word is amateur. The word is built from Corinth, a famous city in ancient Greece, plus -ian. Though actually, ancient Corinth also had a name for rich, wild living, and that coloured other, older uses of Corinthian (luxury, pleasure-seeking). Those are not this sports sense. The sports sense grew later in English, from the idea of the gentleman amateur.
組成From Latin Corinthius + -an; by surface form, Corinth + -ian. Senses about luxury or wild living come from ancient Corinth’s reputation; this amateur-sport sense is a later English use of the same word.
