Copter is a short, informal word for a helicopter — the aircraft with spinning blades on top. News people, pilots, and everyday speakers use it when they want something quicker than the full word: a news copter, a police copter, 'they came in by copter'. It is casual. It is not rude, but it is not the careful word you want in a formal essay. Though actually, it is only the back half of helicopter, used as a word on its own; nobody is thinking about Greek when they say it. You will hear it more in speech and headlines than in textbooks.
