1. 1

A copperhead is a poisonous snake of North America. It is yellow-brown, and the top of its head looks a little like copper, the reddish-brown metal — that is the whole name: copper + head. A bite is dangerous and needs care, though in English stories the rattlesnake is often the more famous villain. People also stretched the name in American history to insult certain politicians, comparing them to the snake, but that is a later nickname, not this animal sense. In class, copperhead means the snake unless a history text clearly says otherwise.
