A coping is the top layer on a wall, or along the edge of a roof: rounded stones or bricks laid there to finish it and to help rain run off instead of sitting in the wall. Builders and architects use this sense; everyday talk almost never does. Though actually the spelling students meet first is usually coping with a problem — that is the verb cope, “to manage,” with -ing, and it has nothing to do with bricks. This building sense comes from an older cope meaning a long cloak that covers you, and then a verb to cope, “to cover.” So a coping is literally the “covering” on top of the wall.
