Copacabana is a famous beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. People picture a long curve of sand where young, good-looking people go to swim, walk, and be seen — a fashionable, holiday kind of place. Though actually it is also the whole area beside the sea, not only the sand: a wide path, hotels, and busy streets sit right behind the beach. In loose English the name sometimes stands for any glamorous beach scene, even when the speaker is not in Brazil. It is a place name, so it takes a capital C. The name is not English: English borrowed Portuguese and Spanish Copacabana, and that name came from Aymara Kotakawana, a god of fertility (a god of making life grow).
