Cooperstown is a small town in the US state of New York. For baseball fans, the name means one place above all: the National Baseball Hall of Fame, a museum of bats, balls, shirts, and the stories of famous players. If someone “goes into Cooperstown” or is “a Cooperstown player,” they do not mean the person lives there. They mean the player is so famous they belong in that Hall of Fame. The town was named after the family who founded it (the writer James Fenimore ’s father). It is a proper name, so it takes a capital C. People who follow baseball know it at once; people who do not may never have heard it.
