A cookout is a party or meal where the food is cooked and eaten outdoors. It is especially American. People bring burgers, corn, and salad; someone cooks over a fire or a grill; everyone eats outside. It overlaps with barbecue: barbecue can mean the food, the grill, or the event, but a cookout is the occasion itself. British English more often just says barbecue. Though actually, you do not need a special grill for the word to fit — if the meal is cooked outside and eaten outside, that is a cookout. It is informal, friendly English, not a restaurant word.
