If someone moves convulsively, they do it in a sudden, violent way they cannot control. The body jerks; a hand clamps shut; a laugh bursts out. It is the adverb that matches convulsive: it tells you HOW the movement happens, not what kind of person someone is. It has the same slightly formal, slightly medical feel. Everyday speech more often says he jerked suddenly, or she could not stop laughing. Though actually, the word is not only for fear or pain — people also sob convulsively from relief, or laugh convulsively at a joke they cannot swallow.
