1. 1

When something is convex, it curves out towards you — like the outside of a ball, or the front of your eye. Convexity is that outward curve, or the fact of having it. You meet the word most in maths, science, and design: a convex lens is thicker in the middle and can bring light together; a convex mirror bulges out and makes things look smaller. The everyday opposite is a hollow, bowl-like curve. Though actually, specialists also stretch convexity onto graphs and even onto money maths, where it names how a line or a price bends — still the same “curves out” picture, just drawn on paper. For most , the physical shape is the meaning that matters, and it is a calm, technical word, not an everyday one.
