To contravene a law or a rule is to do something that law or rule does not allow. Police, courts, companies, and official letters use this word. You contravene a regulation; you do not usually contravene a friend’s advice. It is more formal than break, and close to violate — but violate can also be used for people and for serious harm, while contravene stays with rules, laws, and agreements. Though actually you can contravene a rule by accident; the word is about the fact that you went against the rule, not always about a wicked plan.
