A contraflow is a temporary traffic arrangement, used when a road is being repaired or blocked, that sends vehicles both ways along only one side of the road. One is closed; the remaining side is split so traffic that normally goes the other way is sent against its usual direction, often with cones, a lower speed limit, and a narrow lane. It is mainly British road English — you see it on signs and in traffic reports. Drivers dislike it because the lanes are tight and the oncoming cars feel closer than usual. Though actually, some highways also use a longer-term contraflow lane (for example a rush-hour lane that runs against the normal flow). The everyday meaning, though, is the roadworks one. It is not a type of river, and not a political “counter-flow” of ideas.
