    Contra is a formal word meaning 'against' or 'opposite to' — you mostly meet it in the fixed phrase 'pro and contra' (the arguments for and against something), which is less common today than 'pros and cons.' It also appears as a piece stuck onto other words, like contradict (to speak against) or contrast (to stand against, showing difference) — in those words you don't notice it as a separate word anymore. On its own, contra is rare in everyday speech; you're more likely to meet it in old-fashioned or academic writing, or as a musical term, like contrabass.
