Constructive means useful and helpful, or likely to produce a good result. We use it most about talk, ideas, and criticism, not about bricks and cranes. Constructive criticism tries to help you do better, not only to point at your mistakes. A constructive suggestion offers a way forward. A constructive meeting actually gets somewhere. The everyday opposite people reach for is destructive, or simply negative. It is common at school and at work, and it sounds serious without being stiff. Though actually, do not hear “building” in it and stop there: a constructive comment is not a comment about construction. Lawyers have another, more technical use, where constructive means “treated as if it were so”; that is not the meaning you need first.
