The police force of a particular area or country, especially in Britain, Ireland, and places that follow British usage — “the local constabulary,” “the county constabulary.” It names the whole force, not one officer. In the United States people almost never say this; they say police department. It can sound a little old-fashioned or official, the kind of word you read in a newspaper. Some forces still have Constabulary in their proper name.
組成From mediaeval Latin conestabularia, from constabulus, from Latin comes stabuli — literally “master of the stables” (comes “companion / count” + stabulum “stable”). The job grew from looking after the horses to keeping order, and later to the police.
