A conservationist is a person whose work is to protect living things — animals, plants, forests, rivers — so they are not wiped out. Some work in parks or for charities; some try to change laws. The same word is also used for people who protect old buildings and old streets, so they are not pulled down or rebuilt in a careless way. It is a respectful, slightly formal word. In the news you will hear “wildlife conservationist,” and, less often, “heritage conservationist.” People who mainly talk about clean air, recycling, and the planet as a whole are more often called . A conservationist is usually trying to save some particular place, animal, or old thing. Though actually the two groups often stand together, and newspapers mix the words.
