Connaught is a large western part of the Republic of Ireland — one of the four old provinces, together with Leinster, Munster, and Ulster. It takes in five counties: Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon, and . People still use these province names for sport, history, and a sense of place, even though everyday government work is organised by county, not by province.
Though actually, in Ireland you will more often see Connacht. That is the Irish spelling, and it is the one Irish people prefer now. Connaught is the older English spelling. You still meet it in older books, in some family and army names, and in a few place names outside Ireland. Same place; different letters.
It is not a city. Galway city sits inside it. The west here is known for wild coasts, and in some areas for the Irish language.
