A conman is a person who tricks people in order to take their money. He wins your trust, then cheats you — a fake investment, a sad story that is not true, a “prize” you have to pay for. The word is informal and sharp in tone; it names someone as a cheat, not a job they would print on a card. Though actually, people of any gender can do this; English also says con artist, which does not mark gender, and many writers now prefer that. You will also see it written as two words, con man. Nearby talk: to con someone (the verb) and a con (the trick itself). It is not a magician: the wants applause; the conman wants your wallet.
