The Congo is Africa’s second longest river. It runs through rain forest in the middle of the continent and passes both the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo — two different countries that share the name. On a map you will often see Congo River. It is huge: a great deal of water, many bends, and stretches ships cannot use because of waterfalls. The name comes from Kongo, from the Kongo word nkongo, “hunter,” the name of the old kingdom and people along the lower river. English then used Congo for the river and, later, for the countries around it. Say the river clearly when that is what you mean, because “Congo” alone often makes people think of a country first.
組成After Kongo, from Kongo nkongo, “hunter.” Related words for “spear” appear in Kongo and in Zulu, from the same old Bantu family.
