Confucianism is a Chinese way of thinking that grew from the teaching of Confucius, more than two thousand years ago. It says you should be loyal first to your family, then to friends, then to the people who lead — and that you should treat others the way you would like them to treat you. Though actually, it is not only “be kind.” It cares a lot about the right way to act in each role: child to parent, student to teacher, friend to friend. A good person, in this view, keeps those duties even when nobody is watching. For a very long time, schools and governments in East Asia used these ideas to say what a good life and a good country look like. People sometimes call it a religion, like a church with a god; many families in Taiwan live by it more as life rules and respect than as temple worship. You will hear it when older people talk about being a good child, being polite, and keeping harmony at home.
組成Confucian (from the name Confucius) + -ism (a system of thought). Confucius itself is from New Latin Confucius, from Mandarin 孔夫子 (Kǒng Fūzǐ, “Master Kong”).
